Part 1: Tropical Pacific Part 2: Birds of Paradise

Tropical Pacific

From three months in Northern Indonesia to a month in Fiji, Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, has been firmly tethered to the tropics. Whilst in Fiji he got hit by a cyclone and stranded without power, water or a toilet. He also scored the obligatory blue water barrels.

Here's the first Session in a short series.

Birds of Paradise

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, ain't the sort of fella to go birdwatching on holidays yet when a flock of terns recently flew through the Fijian lineup he kept shooting. The birds make for a brooding, Hitchcock vision against the perfect tropical barrels. Except, that is, for the bloke spreading his own wings in the last shot. Ain't nothin' spooky about him.

PS: I can't confirm if the birds are terns but in the course of research - yeah, I take this shit seriously - I found out there's a bird called a Rough-faced Shag.

Back on native shores

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, has just returned from a three month stint in northern Sumatra. Leaving the northerlies and bluebottles behind he set up camp at Aura Surf Resort on Simeulue, taking photos and surfing. He's back on native shores now and also on somewhat of a roll - since landing he's won a surfboard in a photo competition and lucked into some classic beachbreak days near home.

All photos by Ryan. Surfers include Eddie Kelly, Louie Gervais, Matt Kennedy and Timmy Wright.

Summer on Simeulue Pt. 1

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, escaped the northerly season by setting up base in Northern Sumatra for spring and summer. Working at Aura Surf Resort on Simeulue, Ryan has been photographing all the off-season swells with the last few weeks providing the best waves of his time there. Here's a selection of shots. We'll have another batch this afternoon.

Spring break on the Gold Coast

As the winter westerlies start to fade towards the southern latitudes, a lack of swell and a persistent northerly airstream significantly reduces the number of quality surfable days along the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Before the Northerly

It's late August, approaching Spring, and the Gold Coast has had a great run of swell. Crew are taking advantage of it 'cause as any Goldy surfer knows the dreaded northerlies will start blowing soon and the next three months are gonna drag.

Making the most of the late surge was Matt Kennedy, the goofy, and Dane Hamilton, the natural footer, both of 'em getting slotted before the lens of Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams.

Over and Above

In a North Coast punt session Mitch Parkinson, Samba Mann, Louis Gervais, Eddie Kelly and Timmy Wright keep their rails dry by going over and above the call of duty. The only waves where the rails stay planted are a drop-in and its payback.
