Recently Surfing Australia held its annual awards night. As it was their 50th anniversary Surfing Australia marked the milestone with a special presentation, 'Australia's Ten Most Influential Surfers.' Bob McTavish was deemed Australia's tenth most influential surfer, and, as they were announced in reverse order, he was the first to accept his award. Bob began his speech by opening up on an old topic: Is surfing a sport or an art? As the speech progressed it felt like we were heading toward an awkward faux pas, a black mark on a black tie night.

Occy's Right

Conditions have changed however, and whether it's due to dredging in the bay, changed weather patterns, or rose coloured glasses, it's a fairly rare thing to see it break these days. This morning it was on though and a swag of local lads got their fill. All photos by Ben Degnan.

Up Yonder

Saturday morning in Sydney was nice for a wander with brisk air temps and clear blue skies. Our Cronulla reporter, Darryl Menzies, ambled up the beach to Wanda where the south swell was pushing into a light nor-wester.

Near flat at the south end, the swell was a good 3'-4' at Wanda. And the banks were hosting a typical Saturday morning scene with the whole gamut of surfers represented. From retired pros throwing down hacks on the competition bank to groms busting out in the shorey.
