Spring break on the Gold Coast

As the winter westerlies start to fade towards the southern latitudes, a lack of swell and a persistent northerly airstream significantly reduces the number of quality surfable days along the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Back to the Superbank (and D'bah too)

After a short hiatus the Superbank threw a few lines recently when a small east swell made its way down the well-groomed sandbank. On the weekend Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, drifted down the point shooting various sections, some of them looking as good as they have in many months. He also fired off a couple of frames of Mick spreading his wings at wind-affected D'bah.

Sand, Glorious Sand

The real expensive stuff flows off the coast and stacks up against the beaches in scalloped, undulating patterns.  Ryan Williams and friends pay homage to the real Gold Coast gold while revelling in the waves it creates. Check out more of Ryan's photos by clicking here

GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, February 16, 2011) - Gold Coasters proved that nothing beats local knowledge in the sport of surfing, as a host of up-and-coming Queenslanders dominated the opening exchanges of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star, US$85,000 Breaka Burleigh Pro.

Leading the charge on day one of competition was Coolangatta's Ice Pereira-Ryan who obliterated the 1m Burleigh Heads conditions on his way to scoring a combined two-wave heat total of 12.00 (out of a possible 20).

Off season activity in the Sunshine State

October's not normally revered for its Queensland wave count. Brisk northerly winds frequent the southern Coral Sea, usually blowing out any swells that care to make landfall.
