Mark Matthews' Quest for the Innermost Limits of Surf Photography

Mark Matthews has been pushing the limits of surf photography. Matthews, who was one of the first surfers to utilise GoPro cameras to film his own waves, has built a camera stand to house his GoPro camera. Working in conjunction with Sportscamera, Matthews has fitted the stand to his surfboard and the experimenting has begun.

The results have been exciting although things haven't always gone to plan. During a recent swell at Cape Solander Matthews bagged some excellent barrel time only to have his legrope break and his surfboard, with camera and mount attached, end up on the rocks. While last week he scored huge waves at Cloudbreak yet he forgot to put a memory card in!

Between these two setbacks Matthews managed to score some excellent barrels at Maroubra. See his blog, Chasing Chalk, for the outcome of this session.

Besides his solo filming Matthews is also working with the Storm Surfers team chasing the biggest waves they can find and filming them in 3D. Between the two projects we're about to see a lot more of Mark Matthews.
