Watch: Meanwhile In Tasmania...

Tassie, there's more to it than the ugly steps of Shippies, or so says old mate Kyron Rathbone.

A cheerful and patriotic Taswegian, Kyron not only immerses himself in Tassie surf, but happily flips into observer mode too, filming the waves and coastlines of the plucky little island he calls home.

It's been a good autumn thus far; lots of swell, and from a fair range of directions, all under Indian summer skies casting the last rays of warmth before the sun dips north. Kyron's packaged it all together, and, as is his way, set it to the music of his friends, this time Lune To The Moon.

Enjoy...

Rock climbers- they're certainly an odd breed.

If the price of that is only 4mm of rubber vs the overcrowded and expensive places to live on the Sunny Coast/East coast of Oz I think I'll pack my bags and head south tomorrow. Seriously! Wow thats livin the dream right there. PS Often wondered why on the many OS surf trips Ive done Ive never bumped into any Tas surfers from memory. Based on that video why would they bother leaving! And the points...how's the fact NO ONE is paddling the shoulder in case the rider falls or is thnking about dropping in. Thats refreshing too! Bugger about Bonza otherwise Id a bought me ticket already.

It's chilled up in the last month but this summer was one of the warmest I have felt. Even the tourists were swimming without wetsuits on.

epic edit, love a little 4min thing, totally mazzy tones @stu.
That Mikey shot at 1:40 was so 80s-sensibility with drone tech, loved it.
Gotta love a southern ocean wave and the numbers in the water. (Flick would be clutching her baubles with all that ribbiting though). Kyron is so good, he's more than proven he can afford to switch style and approach to clips, to suit the varying moods of the sea and the ways in which people engage with it.

So awesome. just back from Tassie. I can feel the fresh tassie air in that clip and recall the solitutude. Thought the South Oz peninsulas were Gods country, i was wrong.

Very fickle. I lived there for 6 years. Dont get me wrong there are great waves in Tas and more often then not you are the only ones out.
So may places with hard access, but if you know the right person you can get waves you would only dream of.
The cold does get to you though!

Visited a few years ago and loved it, but there are reasons more people don't live there:
- a lot of driving to get to the surf
- cold, even by NZ standards
- fickle

Would love to go back for another visit.

Don't get the Mazzy Star comparison. Sounded like anything but to me.

Kyron has gone straight to the top of the short filmmakers list. It hasn't seemed like a long time either. Such techniques, style, taste and content.!

Great little clip.

I feel Tassie is best approached with the mind set of getting fun waves, mixed in between hiking and camping.

It's fickle and requires a bit of local knowledge to properly score, but if just travelling around and have a fun board in the car, you're bound to stumble across something rideable. Mix that with the beautiful surrounds and you can't go wrong. Just pack the rubber!

Sounds reasonable to me.

Nothing I ever see makes me want to head down there with heaps of rubber to chase surf.
Those Hobart points always look weird and rippy and baubly and ribbity as hell to me- super hard to ride and they barely break.
A one turn and a closeout hit wave doesn't light my fire either.

Had a mate who moved down there and quit surfing- she said it was just too hard to score a reliable wave and too cold for her.
Another mate, really good surfer originally from Tas, moved back there for family reasons and said it's just so much harder to get consistent surfing done.

Tassie surfers, I salute you.

Oh yeah, epic edit, really enjoyed the foley sounds mixed in.

Yes, I've done it too. Talking surf with a mate yesterday I actually said "baubly."

Damn you Flick, damn you to hell.

Lived there in the 80s and 90s, we used to travel 2 hours to surf the points, they’re actually easy to ride because they’re so perfect. There’s 4 other points they don’t usually show.Yes inconsistent state , not ideal for a few weeks visit, but if you live in the right place and are prepared to travel you get your share of uncrowded perfection.
