Form Guide

Throughout history thinkers have focussed on and highlighted the essentially tragic nature of life. A vale of tears, as Dante described it in the Divine Comedy. Socrates, more hardcore, called it a kind of sickness. Both would have been impressed with the tragedy on display today as eight surfers got cut from the tour at various stages of their careers. Some...most, if recent history is a guide, never to return.

Kelly is gone. Not gone, gone. But off the tour full-time. Despite Joe Turpel's best efforts in the post show, we did not hear the retirement word uttered from Kelly. He indicated interest in wildcards for Teahupoo, Cloudbreak, and Pipe and said he had been approached by Renato about surfing in the CS at Snapper. So it will be mere weeks until we see him in the jersey again. But his era is over, retired now in everything but name. Kelly choked up on the glass after the loss to Griff and he filled up again on the post show. Everywhere around the world where fans had gathered to see the last full-time showing of the GOAT, little frogs throbbed in throats, private tears were wiped away.

He didn't go quietly. His Elimination Round showing against Yago and Cole Houshmand was fire. The opening turn on the opening wave was close to the turn of the day, full rail and back into the hook. 270 degrees of vicious direction change against the grain - the hardest thing to do at Main Break. All day that dichotomy between carving against the grain and a vertical hit and drift played out. Neither approach gained an ascendancy. But Kelly sent Yago Dora packing and possibly back to the CS.

Never a fan of early morning surfs, Slater nevertheless came out firing in the third heat of the day, finishing second in his Elimination Round heat (WSL/Hughes)

The eight who got cut: Kelly, Kade Matson, Deivid Silva, Jacob Willcox, Fred Morais, Callum Robson, Eli Hanneman, Ian Gentil.

There's four more to go.

Of 24 surfers cut from the tour over the last two years, 6 have made it back via the CS, 5 have retired and the rest are mired in second tier purgatory. I see no reason to think this lot will be any different. The biggest tragedy of pro surfing careers remains the clock ticking down on genuine CT talent that gets relegated before showing its true potential.

As he mourned on the steps, the hooter sounded for the next heat and the tour now moves on without Kade. There was, however, time for the photographer to capture his anguish (WSL/Ryder)

A brief riff on Kelly's career. He identified 1995/96 and 2008 as his competitive high points. He won 6 events in 2008, a phenomenal showing. Snapper, Bells, Fiji, J-Bay, Trestles, and Pipe. It was the undoubted highwater mark of both Kelly and the Dream Tour.

My favourite period came a little later. The two years after his last World Title in 2011. He won three events in both 2012 and 2013. Surfing good waves on mostly round-tail quads at a different level in his forties. Cloudbreak in 2013 being the peak of that post-title period. Feel free to add below your recollections of the peak moments of Slater's 34-year career.

There were no capitulations from those below the cut. Everyone fought hard, brought their best surfing - as a sporting spectacle it was close to as good as pro surfing gets sans epic waves. Tight heats abounded. Deivid Silva lost an opening exchange of excellent rides with JJF by 0.16 and gave the two-time champ a real scare with a high risk vertical hit and drift approach. John sat for ages before nailing another excellent ride with the final margin less than half a point. Chippo went down by less than a point to good pal Liam O'Brien despite the best wave of the heat, a result that LOB described as “such a bummer of a heat”. At 27-years old, how many more swings has Chippo got at it?

Nine years of battling on the QS, three on the CS, where Chippo finally makes the jump to the CT, and he's gone in five comps (WSL/Hughes)

Zero-point-zero-three (0.03) separated Maui boys Ian Gentil and Imaikalani Devault after 35 minutes. That's coin toss stuff.

Emotions boiled over after Kade Matson lost on a buzzer beater ride by 0.6 of a point to Italo Ferreira. Kade's claim seemed to span minutes. Italo seemed confused in the shorebreak, perhaps thinking he had lost and slammed his board, then headbutted it multiple times. Later, in a sotte voce whisper of an interview, the victorious Ferreia choked up multiple times as he considered Kelly's career, coming to a conclusion that despite all the titles, “sometimes we just need to be happy”. He alluded to struggles over the last few days saying he felt like he was “on the dark side” and that he had been “praying to God to help me”.

Whoa, Mummas don't let your babies grow up to be pro surfers. For what does it profit a man (or woman) to gain the whole world (or world titles) and forfeit his soul?

Though his wave counts have been low - John rode just two waves in his clash against Deivid Silva - the highlights truly sparkled. Arms at 90 degrees to the turn, body below the horizontal, John directs all his forces onto that inside rail  (WSL/Ryder)

A common theme of exasperation at the lack of surfing opportunity so far this year was expressed by John Florence.

John seemed rattled by his brother's success at scoring on his so-called Slab Tour. Said he was sick of being "tested" - in reference to Coach Williams who said the lack of waves in his heat with Silva would be a “good test for John”. He said he “just wants to go surfing and get some good waves” before clarifying that the desire to compete and win was still strong.

How long before that contradiction is resolved depends on the forecast for the rest of the season. John will only stand getting skunked for so long.

Italo and Gabe saved their spots on Tour. Italo in a sketchy, emotional performance as mentioned. Gabe was much more composed. In an overlapping heat with Ryan Callinan he went to work early, not producing any keeper scores but running what must have been an annoying mosquito buzz for R-Cal. Somehow he ended up with an extra back-up score and when the crucial wave for wave exchange occurred judges gave Medina the nod by a point and change. Gabe and John open the Round of 16 with a blockbuster clash.

Composed in the water, Gabe was physically moved at the sight of Mig Pupo's backhand attack while he was being interviewed for his heat win (WSL/Hughes)

The Pupo brothers got through with super gritty performances. Sammy hit a couple of hard turns then literally dismounted on the bricks as if he had bailed on a skateboard bombing a hill at top speed. Somehow the sprawling awkward crash did not bust an ankle or knee. With both the brothers still alive in the draw it must be a proof of cruel and malicious Gods to match them up in the Round of 16, where one will perish from the draw and be cut from the tour.

Who will survive, Sammy, with his young career still ahead of him, or Miggy who will be masterful at Tahiti and Cloudbreak?

Phew, what a day.

Jack Robbo rounded it off with a tight but convincing win against Cal Robson before gazing into the Sunset at the presser and declaring he wanted action at the Box. That would make the 2022 champion a red hot favourite against Italo Ferreira, or anyone. Chances of heats at the Box? Almost nil.

Modern heat preparation: Jack visualising his heat win over North Coast tradie Callum Robson (WSL/Ryder)

Relief was the emotion Kelly said he felt most. No more sleepless nights, no more pro tour crowds, or working on specific waves and obsessing over boards.

Do we believe him?

Is this really the end?

And if Kelly wins Snapper, or wins Teahupoo?

Or the unthinkable happens and he gets a berth at the Olympics.

It remains almost impossible to see Kelly going gently into that good night.

Even at 52.

Even with a new bub mere months away.

Despite the fanfare, the tears, the declarations of love, this still feels like the beginning of the end, not the final page of the book.

That was 95/96/

I remember being in the carpark for Pipe opposite Sunset Beach elementary School.

Little tiny rusted out 2 door Honda shitbox pulls up, with boards in the front seat tilted back.

Kelly gets out of the front, tllts drivers seat forwards and Pam literally spills out of the back seat- the assets were, um, very unsecured.

She went back to Tommy shortly afterwards.

Sammy Pupo was like a blade runner. Full noise through a brick wall.

I figured out today basically you are watching life's winners in the act of losing. Think of all the victories that went into these losses.

Don't worry fellas. You'll get used to it. Maybe start like it even.

Yep, amazing day of pro surfing.

Felt there was a hint of aged footy player in Kelly's post show remarks around not wanting to leave the hive (my words).

Attention must shortly turn to wildcards, what is available? 1 permanent and 1 rolling? They'll need to save the rolling one for Kelly's opt in events. My bet is Yago getting the permanent 1 if he misses the cut.

Fair to say that - love it or hate it - without The Cut, there wouldn't have been a great deal to discuss today. Just a bunch of surfers who didn't progress through the Round of 32, and would kick the can down the road to the next event; so on and so forth.

Gotta say too, the WSL's photography team are smashing it out of the park these days. Wasn't so long ago all they offered were high performance manoeuvres and the odd scenic lineup shot.

Now they're catching the subtleties behind the scenes which really convey what goes into each heat (and the after effects, whether it's a win or loss).

I agree, that was tough to watch, but theatre of sport and all that.

What I thought was even more brutal than the photographer rushing to get the shot was, while Kade had his head down and his world was imploding, the hooter for the next heat sounded. The tour didn't stop and care about his plight, it kept moving on - his life's ambition was of no consequence to its momentum.

For mine the Cut has bought about a rapid and dramatic improvement in performance amongst the "bottom" end of the Tour.

There's more understanding now, that what is required has to be top shelf from the get go.

Previously, rookies would tend to drift through a year, tentatively finding their way with no real urgency to the performance until the latter few events.
Numerous examples: Ethan Ewing, Mike February, Soli Bailey etc etc

Those days are gone now- it's straight up bangers against the big boys or you're going home in May.

Thats an anecdotal observation, but I will try and find the data to support that assertion.

As you indicated in your article, to me, what is sad about the cut is not the cut, but the waves (apart from Pipe) that the surfers are exposed to before the cut (three open-ocean similar"ish" righthanders and a mostly-close-out).

Thanks FR. What a day of viewing. I went back and listened to bits missed, was really taken by Italo's interview. He is trying to calmly convey the pressure and what it does - please pro surfing make sure there are resources and support available to the athletes.

When growing up, the sports area had great prestige and great athletes we knew were given the world and no repercussions for excess behaviour, and how that turned out were hilarious times (such as running/swimming a triathalon to avoid a RBT), but people going off the rails later did so privately and largely alone when doing it, but very publicly once the news got the story.

These were the guys that destroyed us normies at sport in school grades, often rubbing it in, but no one deserves what some of them ended up going through. Maybe Felipe really meant it when he took the year off for mental health.

As for the Olympics, surfing must be the only sport involved with such a convoluted entry process.
Surely any country should just send the athletes that have the most chance of winning, that might change with the venue .
Kelly would be a realistic shot at winning in Tahiti and I for one would like to see him there.
Aus team looking solid but lots of questionable surfers involved due to winning heats in 2 ft Beach breaks to final at a dangerous slabbing reef break.
It will evolve over time I guess but too late for the goat.

agreed. cycling (of all things) has a more effective way of putting teams together for the olympics where a course could vary from dead flat to mountainous - not much different from japan to chopes.

it's weighted by a ranking system based on how well each country's riders are doing professionally, so the better your riders, the more slots you get - i.e. belgium might get a 4 rider team where poland gets only 1 rider.

and from there the riders are selected by a committee to ensure you don't get the wrong rider for the course, so if your best rider is a climber type but the olympic course is flat they typically aren't chosen despite leading the professional rankings. always a lot of controversy around who gets picked and who doesn't.

in such a scenario for surfing, and should i be a selector for the us of a, i would pick kelly and jjf over griff for sure.

I still don't buy it. Neither of them would ever be in the run for a world title, ever. That's my definition, otherwise they're just making up the numbers. There's a very small shortlist of top surfers and they're not remotely near it.

If they were so good they'd drop off and re-qualify ASAP ala Molly Picklum, who is definately CT material.

There are only ever 5 surfers in any given year who are in the running for a World Title- so that makes for a small field.

Could Chippo or Ramzi win Chopes or Cloudbreak and put on elite performances- yes.

Thats my yardstick.

Agree on the wasted 10yrs but isn’t that due to the lack of quality waves on the Cs? There’s a big difference between the waves you have to qualify on and the waves on the Ct. well, at least when it’s pumping…

Also, I think Ramzi is doing well. Might be biased but want to see more of the big guy on the CT.

He hasn’t made it out of the round of 32 this year and frankly he is just as likely to not turn up if he does not like the forecast. Lied and or taken the piss too many times over the last few years. Maybe a few years ago id have given it to him if it was a real retirement lap. Not now. If the WSL need him then get him in the booth. He was great with Mick a few years back and or have a special invite 1 hour fun heat with Kelly ?

Don't worry, the heritage heats won't be far off.

If he's in the bottom of the age bracket, sure.
I reckon Parko or Mick would take him.

Similar to the vintage/legends heats, I reckon they should have a commentators heat, and throw 6 or so commentators into the lineup, and put a few CT competitors in the commentary box.

Brilliant. Lets also do a judges heat where a selection of Brazo to the scoring

That was very entertaining, certainly more so than recent years. The cut might not be so bad after all, with a few tweaks it could be epic. A no brainer but adjust the timing of events to coincide with the peak swell window for each location. Move the leg of the tour where the cut takes place to somewhere like Jbay or chopes and hold the finals at Pipe with those who didn't make the cut given the chance to compete to reclaim a limited number of places on next years CT. Never gonna happen but would make for more days like this one.

Slater's barrel on the buzzer at Ocean Beach 2011. I don't think he needed it to win, but it was a real 'only kelly' moment. Cool reaction from crowd too.

It's a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. Slater seems to be shy and overwhelmed in the limelight yet doesn't want to step out of the tour bubble into real life. I'm sure he would love to surf in the Olympics and has been a keystone of contests at Teahupoo. We'll just see what unfolds.

Felt muchly for Cal Rob and Wilcox. Hard to watch that, especially with Wilcox getting the high score of the heat (IIRC)

Kelly’s departure neither here nor there for me. He’s hung around too long to prise any emotion from my cold, dead soul.

But the cut is the cut. It was always there. Used to happen at end of season, now it happens mid-season. Saves them some money and increases the chances of them surfing good waves with less heats. A batch of barely-hangings-on don’t have to stump up for flights and accommodation, well, not for the CT stops anyway.

But they have been skunked. Haven’t had good Bells or Margs since they introduced it. Or maybe one good Margs, no good Bells (both have had good days, but too many decisive heats in shit waves).

That’s been the problem.

Excellent idea for use of the pool, make it actually exciting and give everyone the exact same opportunity when it really counts.
Prob should be used for Olympics also as boring as it may be

WSL scores need to be scaled to the wave quality & size surfed, before and after the cut

maby the surfers who have forfeited there soul and are cut should be able to surf the rest of the year.....but they surf the first round, 4 per heat 1 wildcard in each and winner progress. then they dont have to get a day job for 8months of the year.

Don't get me wrong, I love the GOAT, but its interesting watching the interview on the glass & he was talking about his lack of motivation, its not "all roses" and he's ready for the next chapter. Meanwhile Ramzi is ripping the shit out of everything, looks super fit & hungry as ever... Kelly took his place with much controversy, and just collected dirty turds. Ramzi could be well on his way if he was given his chance last time... Still, looking forward to watching KS in waves of cone-esquence with no pressure in upcoming events!

Some legends wrote a giant "GO JACK!" in seaweed on the sand near the bottom of the stairs before changing it to "GO JACOB" and then to "FREE GAZA" during Kelly's heat. While the camera operators went to lengths to avoid showing it on the broadcast the message of solidarity somehow survived the day before mysteriously disappearing overnight.

Is chippo really 27? Fuck I’d be pissed off if I was surfing for my career in the onshore junk they had to endure. At least give them a go in decent conditions. The forecast must be fucked to continue that round in that rubbish

Without Kelly, there probably wouldn’t be a WSL. Some WSL privileges have not been entirely unwarranted.
