The latest in Great White shark research will be discussed at two lectures presented by CSIRO scientist Dr Barry Bruce. The first will be held at Melbourne Aquarium on Friday 17 August. The following night, Saturday 18th August, Patagonia Torquay will host the lecture.

Australia's foremost authority on sharks, Barry will focus on their movements and behaviour in Australian waters, as well as why these amazing animals are so ingrained into the Australian psyche.

CSIRO are partnering with Victoria's Whitetag organisation and its Tag For Life Trust on white shark projects at Port Stephens (NSW), Port Lincoln (SA) and more recently, Corner Inlet in Victoria. Research activities include the tagging and tracking of juvenile and adult white sharks, genetic tissue sampling and DNA mapping.

Barry will be discussing the latest results uploaded from acoustic listening stations off the eastern side of Wilsons Promontory; and focus particularly on what this means for future white shark research in Australia and the importance of Victorian waters.

Dates: Friday 17 August & Saturday 18 August
Location: Friday - Melbourne Aquarium (please enter off Flinders Street), Saturday - Patagonia Torquay, 116 Surf Coast Highway
Time: Friday - 5:45pm for a 6pm start. Saturday - 7pm.
Cost: Friday - $15 per person. Saturday - free.

If attending Melbourne Aquarium please RSVP to media@melbourneaquarium.com.au.

In February 2012, Melbourne Aquarium donated $40,000, which contributed to an acoustic listening station array inside Corner Inlet, as well as the curtain stretching from Wilsons Promontory to Seal Island. It also contributed to the tagging of the first white juvenile shark inside Corner Inlet in Dec 2010, from which significant data has been collected.
