Swellnet Dispatch Yorke Peninsula Surfing Reserve Nomination Gains Momentum

In support of the National Surfing Reserve nomination process, pioneer Yorkes surfer Geoff (Gordie) Rogers has been busy compiling a history of the initial surfing exploration of the Southern Yorke Peninsula coast.

He has managed to trace the first group of surfers to surf in the Daly Head region. This takes the activity of surfing with the local area back to the early 1960's.

Highly regarded South Australian surf historian Christo Reid visited the area recently to meet with the Surfing Reserve Committee. He provided valuable insights into the nomination process. Christo has offered to display material relevant to the initial surfing forays in the region.

A reunion weekend is currently being planned for the original surfers and others who have had an affinity with the local environment and waves over the past five decades. This event is to take place on Saturday January 14th 2012 on a private property in the Daly Head/Gleesons area.

The weekend is planned to further inform the surfing and broader community about what the group is endeavouring to achieve with the establishment of a surfing reserve. The provision of protective structures that ensure the maintenance of the natural environment for generations to come will be a key outcome of this enterprise.

Activities and events will include information and memorabilia displays, historical surf  film screening, entertainment, bands, storytelling and food. Camping is available on site.
