Stepping out of your car to feel a fresh seabreeze wafting over your face and seeing knee high waves lapping along the shore never generates a feeling of stoke in a surfer, right?
Wrong!
The Disabled Surfers Association days are occasions where the need for quality surf fails in comparison to simple joys of feeling cool salt water on your skin, the warm sun on your face and the unfamiliar motion of being pushed along by a wave instead of a wheelchair.
This seasons final event of the Disabled Surfers Association in Perth was held in conditions that would see any other surfing event around the world cancelled. Instead, one of the most magical days of surfing was enjoyed by well over 100 people.
DSA introduces people with a range of disabilities to the world of surfing. A world that we, as surfers, often take for granted. Some of our participants not only get to experience this amazing sport for the first time, but in some cases it's their initial introduction to the ocean.
There are DSA branches all over the country that welcome all participants and are in constant need of volunteers. In fact, you don't even have to know how to surf to help out, you just need a heart and a little compassion. Check out the DSA website for all upcoming event details in your local area and be sure to check them out on Facebook.//MIKE MAXTED
