Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage Finals finished in style today, after three days of solid surfing tore apart North Cronulla beach.
Seeing picture perfect conditions as the canvas for some amazing surfing, Sean Mawson (Manyana, NSW) led the way in the blue ribbon division (16 years division). However Harry Man (Torquay, VIC) 2nd, Jordan Lawler (Narrabeen, NSW) 3rd and Zac Scott (Werri Beach, NSW) 4th, made sure Mawson didn't have things all his way in the final by coming within a whisker of winning.
Accruing a total heat score of 11.34 which included an impressive 7.67 (out of a possible 10), there was only 1.34 points between 1st and 4th.
At 16 years of age, it's Mawsons last year in the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage, and he is looking forward to entering a few Pro Juniors on a high in 2011.
"It's the first time I've won this event, it feels unreal especially since it's my last teenage Rampage".
Mawson especially loves the unique competition format and it's one of his favorite events. "Ocean and Earth put so much into it compared to other events, they do more for the competitors, it's all about us having fun and getting loads of waves".
Lining up in the 16 years girls were standouts Nikki Van Dijk (Cowes, VIC), Ellie-Jean Coffey (Cresent Head, NSW), Keely Andrew (Mooloolaba, QLD) and Fiona Casey (South West Rocks, NSW). Witnessing some amazing surfing and a plethora of futuristic maneuvers, it was Van Dijk who reigned supreme over Coffey, Andrew, and Casey who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Having surfed with unmatchable style over the three day event, Van Dijk is riding high after mixing it up with some of the countries best. "I love coming to Sydney, it's unreal to surf in an international event"
The current U18 Women's Junior Champion had a great time during the event, with the media launch and opening ceremony she felt like a professional. "It's like being at the CT, we have our own competitors area and a media launch where we get competitors packs ".
In the 13 Boys Division it was Merewether's (NSW) Jackson Baker who took the honors over Kai Hing (Wurtulla Beach, QLD), James Young (Yamba, (NSW) and International favorite Kanoa Ingarashi from California, USA. Baker clinched the title with patient wave selection proving a winning formula achieving the highest heat wave score of 8.67.
The 13 Girls Division saw Holly-Sue Coffey (Cresent Head, NSW) add another trophy to the Coffey family trophy cabinet, winning the tight final from Holly Wawn (New port, NSW), with Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) in third and Lucy Callister (Noosaville, QLD), in fourth. With sister Ellie-Jean finishing second in the 16 years division, the sibling surf sessions seem to be proving a successful breeding ground. "I'm so happy to win, my sister (Elli-Jean) and I always try to beat each other so when I compete, it really helps me out".
