I recently called Allois from Pohnpei Surf Club to get an update on how the surf has been in the Caroline Islands. Allois used to run the Brazilian Barbeque night at the backpackers on Oahu's North Shore, but for the last eight years has been running Pohnpei Surf Club - his own slice of paradise.

The season got off to a roaring start with a huge NW swell that saw a stellar cast of pros all make the dash from Hawai'i (see Pumping at P-Pass, Pounded at Papua). However, unlike Hawai'i it kept pumping through the mid-season. The NW storm track that bumped the low pressure systems away from Hawaii had no affect on the Carolines with a succession of swells lighting up P-Pass.

As for late season, well, it was March last year when Shane Dorian, Mark Matthews and Dan Ross surfed giant P-Pass. Pictures from that swell were splashed across the surf media, such was the size and perfection they scored.

The photos below were taken by a guest, Pedro Felizardo, during a recent swell. //STUART NETTLE
