Don't forget the Chinese ( oh yes the company in charge of the tunnel is Chinese owned)Belt and Road deal the feds had to step in and quash, the redshirts, the draconian lockdowns, the awarding of contracts for myki reconstruction to the company that was 100 million dearer, and yet they have no experience in public transport systems, yet other cheaper tenders had successfully done major worldwide city's systems that receive acclaim for their modern transport systems are ignored......etc the list of amazing cockups is unbelievable and yet the dictator claims he doesn't want hospitals and education to lose out. WTF. He wastes money like no tomorrow. Our healthcare system is broken, and our schools are struggling. He also is refusing to release how much the whole process of winning the commonwealth has cost. It's no surprise he can't afford it. A lot of the positions advertised for the commonwealth games i.e logistics co ords, hospitality director, and accommodation organizer have had packages of 260k and upwards for 12 months contracts advertised.
Victoria is fucked and he will ride off into the sunset with his golden handshake leaving the state in a dire position.

The thing with Commonwealth and Olympic Games cost-benefit analysis is the costs are tangible, immediate, upfront and easily quantifiable, and typically borne by the govt.
But the benefits are a mix of tangible and easy to quantify financial benefits like to local economies during the event, combined with hard to quantify intangible and often long-term benefits like the community value in infrastructure usage, promotion of the area and region to the world, forecast long-term boost to the regions and resulting tax revenue, etc.
Weird, you accuse everyone of bias against a real communist dictatorship in China but then go the hack on a democratically elected leader. Disagree with his actions and policies? Fine, but pejoratives dimminish your arguments.
The thing with intangible benefits gsco is that those who make the tangible benefits (the construction companies, the consultants, the hospitality industry) are very eager to wax lyrical about the intangible benefits that they will never have to measure or be accountable for. I've written nonsense like that before as a job and it's very easy and it barely has to be believable for it to pass. Just look at the claims made about the stadium in Hobart - the only cost benefit analysis to exist said it will lose money over the long term, but every vested interest is saying it will cure everything from the housing crisis, get kids off the bongs, lift up Indigenous Australians, and create a sense of civic pride that will "make us believe/let our spirits soar/create a generation of proud Tasmanians" etc etc etc. It's all garbage and it all comes from vested interests.

That's an entire new national car for that money, and thousands employed, who pay tax and spend money in their local community, and that's technical career paths for Australians. Maybe don't do a Commodore but something like a Ranger today (engineered in house by Ford Australia, built in Thailand though) - and with the ladder on frame chassis of the latter you're actually making something more simple than the 2006 car and probably cheaper to produce in 2023 with way more profit margin, ha!
And you could find niches in further tech, for example when covid hit semiconductors became scarce in the car industry - but it wasn't the high end ones used in the cars, it was the more simple, older designs as semiconductor firms focussed on high end consumer electronics. There was a huge gap in the supply of the lower tech ones and that's some reason toward why we have 2-3 year wait lists for some cars now...
Any of that sort of stuff seems smarter than construction sugar hits and 12 day events for the same money.

I worked on the Burnley Tunnel back in the late 90's and the contract for the whole City Link project was $2 billion. That's a shitload of infrastructure which if you look at it in today's money is still nowhere near the cost of running 12 days of the empire games. People can shitcan Dan Andrews as much as they like for other mistakes he's made, but in this instance at least he's had the balls to make the right decision. Be good if Jeremy Rockliff could grow a pair and do the same.

Yes he did cancel the contract but let’s revisit the full story and facts shall we.
The then ALP opposition had a formal policy for over a year leading up to the election of not building the EW tunnel.
Opinion polls for that same period showed that the majority of Victorians opposed the tunnel and supported the ALP policy of not building it.
Polls for the same period also showed that the ALP would win the election in a landslide (which they eventually did).
Notwithstanding (1) the ALPs formal policy of not building the tunnel and (2) opinion polls for 12 months showed voters supported the ALP no build policy and a ALP election victory the then LNP government decided a week before calling the election (and therefore entering caretaker mode during which major decisions are not made) to sign the contract.
Now if that piece of shitfuckery wasn’t bad enough the LNP government also signed a secret compensation contract awarding the private company 100s of millions in compensation if the new ALP government made good with its policy of not building the tunnel.
So yes it did cost taxpayers over a billion to exit that contract but it was caused by the biggest act of LNP political bastardly the state has ever seen.
BTW the tunnel has now been rejected by voters at the last 4 elections.

Yes he did cancel the contract but let’s revisit the full story and facts shall we.
The then ALP opposition had a formal policy for over a year leading up to the election of not building the EW tunnel.
Opinion polls for that same period showed that the majority of Victorians opposed the tunnel and supported the ALP policy of not building it.

Now if that piece of shitfuckery wasn’t bad enough the LNP government also signed a secret compensation contract awarding the private company 100s of millions in compensation if the new ALP government made good with its policy of not building the tunnel.
So yes it did cost taxpayers over a billion to exit that contract but it was caused by the biggest act of LNP political bastardly the state has ever seen.
BTW the tunnel has now been rejected by voters at the last 4 elections.

I was thinking about this today.
His record as a leader on paper and from a practical perspective is absolutely terrible especially during covid, but it really doesn't matter because from a political and media presentation perspective he is a genius, he is so good at flipping narratives and working what should be a negative into a positive, he does it almost effortlessly, he did it during covid and is doing it again with this issue.
While coming from very different ends of the political spectrum its actually very Trump like in many regards how he can twist things and convince a large number of people to the views he wants and create a cult like status with a cult like following.
I think it also has a lot to do with just always being able to keep a poker face and never admit you are wrong and just keep hammering home the view you want people to believe, and if you say it enough times firmly but without to much aggression or emotion there become a point where many actually start believing it.

I was in Sydney the other night and watched Panama - France in the women World Cup. Stadium was full, with great atmosphere and superb organisation. There is definitely an appetite for quality events in this country. And we have some great infrastructure in place to support it.

“We have informed Commonwealth Games authorities of our decision to seek to terminate the contract and to not conduct, not host the games,” he told reporters today.
He said the forecast figure of $2.6 billion, was looking to more than $6 billion.
“I cannot stand here and say to you that I have any confidence that that even $7 billion number would appropriately and adequately fund these games.”
