"Of course all political violence is equivalent. It’s just your perspective that justifies it or not."

So, take the poll tax riot for example. Working peoples versus the power of the State.

The Labour party of the time, let alone Thatcher (who of course was never for turning), said civil disobedience would achieve nothing. And that the riot was a disgrace and counter-productive.

They were wrong. By the end of that year Thatcher was ousted and her Tory successor John Major revoked the tax at the first opportunity.

The other groups I mentioned were all involved in a struggle with entrenched and dominant establishment power. And change happened in varying degrees. Mostly positive. Maybe.

With what is going on in France as we speak, and the obvious power imbalance, the violence is equivalent? Even if you're a Macron supporter, you still think there's equivalence?

More importantly, again, when does 'violence' - in whatever guise - work, so to speak? Is it ever justifiable?

Or is all political violence to be denigrated and resisted?

"More haste, less speed."

All political violence is equivalent.....still. It’s just not the answer you think it should be.

Which Side Are You On?

A Song by Florence Patton Reece.

Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how that good old union
Has come in here to dwell

Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner
And I'm a miner's son
And I'll stick with the union
Till every battle's won

They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J.H. Blair

Oh, workers can you stand it?
Oh, tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Us poor folks haven't got a chance
Unless we organize.

From Crikey:

In a 1996 episode of Four Corners profiling the then-opposition leader, John Winston Howard was asked about his musical tastes and answered that he was into what people would call "protest songs by Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. I like them immensely." Interviewer Liz Jackson prodded Howard on the point: "But you weren't part of that protest generation", to which Howard answered:

"Well, my views were different from some of them ... I mean, I guess, everybody has ... but you shouldn't get so hung up, you shouldn't be so politically correct, that somebody that may not necessarily share the views of the vocalist, can't enjoy the music, that's very narrow minded. That's the sort of thing that you'd expect from the politically correct brigade."

Dylan, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” and perhaps the greatest lyricist in popular music.

Big John just liked the tunes, man.

Maybe he sang, or rather hummed, in the same manner as Bob?

Then again...

"Hey True Blue, don't say you've gone
Say you've knocked off for a smoko
And you'll be back la-ater on
Hey True Blue, Hey True Blue

Give it to me straight, face to face
Are you really disappearing
Just another dying race
Hey True Blue

True Blue, is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad, is it a cockatoo
Is it standin' by your mate when he's in a fight
Or just Vegemi-ite
True Blue, I'm a-asking you

Hey True Blue, can you bear the load
Will you tie it up with wire
Just to keep the show on the road
Hey True Blue

Hey True Blue, now be Fair Dinkum
Is your heart still there
If they sell us out like sponge cake
Do you really care
Hey True Blue."

I never did understand that saying about opinions and arseholes. I mean, of course everyone has an arsehole. Everyone has a nose too, so are opinions like noses?

I imagine it came from a D-grade 80s film, probably starring Rob Lowe or Corey Feldman, and you were supposed to laugh because, despite the lack of wit, it included the world 'arsehole' and was delivered in a sneering, dismissive way.

To any aspiring politicians out there this one's for you. (Inspired by the election of 2004)

Wild spending and ridiculous promises
Outspoken dreamers and constant advertisements
In your face in everyway till polling day passes
Have a round on me and make me Prime Minister

Absentia votes and electoral boundaries
Surplus or deficit tax relief we never get
Up or down interest rate buy or sell maybe wait
Like the look of me and vote me Prime Minister

I'll give you everything you need say the politician
Spending the budget is my decision.

Labor or Liberal normal or typical
Replublican or democrat green or church party hat
Keep it simple kiss a kiddie smile a lot and keep it witty
Like the look of me and vote me blind minister

I'll give you everything you want say the politician
Smoke and mirrors just an illusion
I'm very generous when I'm spending your money
With one hand in your pocket on the other total confusion

Vote for me vote for me trust me I'm the politician of the day
Trust me trust me just vote for me I promise to lead you astray

Tunnel vision with conditions
black or white what a fight
Love or war what's the score
mass destruction hey what for
Stay or go dont you know
Do what I say and reap what I sow
Wont you look and see and vote me Prime Minister

Well I 'll tell you everything you need to know
Say the politicians
When it comes to those spending those budget taxes
Its always my decision
Cause I'm at my most generous
When I'm spending your money
With one hand in your pocket on the other total destruction

Well I tell you what I think you should do With politicians
If you wanna have a crack at running this country Stop snoozin
If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything
So stand up for your right to run
Its election time again.

Vote 1

You!

Wasn't me, officer. I swear. I wasn't even in the country.

And according to local folklore, stubbie glanced off his noggin (big target), cheer went up, whereupon he then decided to call it quits. Cue: another cheer.

But don't let that get in the way of lurid & emotive detail.

Do I condone it now? No, gramps.

Anyway, here's a tune to smooth the waters:

The detail comes from the fact that my missus was there wth my mates partner whilst we hung at his place at the southern end of the capes.

If you think a bottle to the face is funny then you’ll celebrate the folklore of a guy with a couple of catchy tunes getting bottled.

The sympathy of the fake left - It’s a kaleidoscope of opposing victimhoods. Who’s better , who’s best ....inverted.

Who’s entitled......who’s hand is closest to the till of the Nation.

But by all means continue to melodramatise the PC emotional plight of any minority’s you feel have been triggered .

That vid is fairly unwatchable. His rendering of that tune almost unlistenable.

The lyrics:

I never met someone so jaded,
Your music's really overrated
Nothing but a lot of pretentious noise,
I know that Claire Danes is your chick
To me you're just some ugly prick
Who got lucky 'cause he knew the Beastie Boys

And I can't stand it
A lot goes on, but nothing happens, but this time that's not true,
Yeah, I wrote this song for you
To tell you that your fifteen minutes of fame are almost up,
Yeah and one more thing
Ben Lee, you suck

Bob Dylan must be kinda pissed
'cause you've been writing all his hits,
Repackaged and reprocessed for the world
I'd love to kick you in the face, break your legs
And throw you from a train, 'cause you're such a fucking girl

And I can't stand it
A lot goes on, but nothing happens, but this time that's not true,
Yeah, I wrote this song for you
To tell you that your fifteen minutes of fame are almost up,
Yeah and one more thing
Ben Lee, you suck

I guess this song's come to an end
I'll say goodbye until we meet again
You better stay out of my town
'Cause if I had my way, I'd call up Snoop, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre
We'd come and beat you down

A lot goes on, but nothing happens, but this time that's not true,
Yeah, I wrote this song for you
To tell you that your fifteen minutes of fame are almost up,
Yeah and one more thing
Ben Lee, you suck.
