Over
80 enthusiastic young surfers from up and down the NSW coast took part in the
8th annual RIP CURL LAKE MACQUARIE GROM COMP as part of the 2006 Lake Macquarie
City Games over the weekend of September 2 and 3, at the north end of Catherine
Hill Bay.
The
event was blessed with near perfect conditions for the entire weekend with glassy
1.0m waves fanned by light to medium offshore wind for the entire duration. It
was a pretty ideal set-up and the groms were 'frothin'! The best single individual
performance was by Bronte's Wylie Moyes who unfortunately for him, peaked in the
Semis Finals the Under 18s. Wylie got a double long barrel and scored a perfect
10 off the judges AND then a 9.5 for an almost similar wave for a contest highlight
19.5 out of a possible 20. Wylie couldn't repeat that in the
Final though. The results were as follows : Girls
Under 12 1st Emma Allen (Boomerang) 2nd Phillipa Anderson (Merewether) 3rd
Paige Haggerston (Catho) 4th Samantha Schumacher (Redhead) Boys
Under 12 1st Joshua Szele (Warilla) 2nd Tyla Hutchinson (Warriewood)
3rd Adam Perica (Bronte) 4th Bodi Smith (North Narrabeen) Boys
Under 14 1st Jack Scollard (Tea Tree) 2nd Alex Swadling (Coffs Harbour) 3rd
Doug Chandler (Werri Beach) 4th Joel Ford (Cabarita) Boys
Under 16 1st Sam Paterson (Shelley Beach) 2nd Sam Lendrum (Catho)
3rd Jordy Watson (Currarong) 4th Karl Melo-Richards (Maroubra) Boys
Under 18 1st Tyler Williams (Catho) 2nd Josh Bull (Bonny Hills)
3rd Perth Standlick (Bondi) 4th Wylie Moyes (Bronte) 5th
place overall (one off the Final) Encouragement Awards went to Amber Radford (Catho)
in the Under 18 Girls, Brendan Pullen (Catho) in the Under 14 Boys, Sam Schuman
(Forster) in the Under 16 boys, Duncan McNichol (Merewether) in the Under 18 boys
and young Jackson Baker (Merewether) in the Under 12 Boys.
Thanks
to major sponsors Rip Curl for the 8th straight year and minor sponsors Kuta Lines,
Delta Electricity, Swansea Surf and the Surf Shack on the highway at Belmont.
As well as all the many dedicated helpers without whose valued support and tireless,
unheralded efforts such a great event wouldn't have went off so successfully.
