KNIGHTS
BEACH, South Australia (Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006) After almost seven years
of waiting, Pro Bodyboarding returned to South Australia as the Redback Pro launched
at Knights Beach on Saturday. Hundreds of spectators and onlookers enjoyed
the festival-like atmosphere as a new beginning for South Australian Bodyboarding
was forged.
Both the Redback Pro and State Titles were held
in fun two to three feet conditions, and after a great day of barrels and many
big boosts courtesy of the infamous Knights wedge, Gold Coast local Corey McLean
took the Men's Pro event out over former South Aussie boy Eli Beach. Current
tour leader Lauren Knowles from Newcastle stamped her dominance on the 2006 tour
taking out the Women's Pro whilst Justin Welsh from Victoria slashed his way to
victory in the Pro Drop-knee.
Fresh off the back off the Sintra
Pro in Portugal, Mike Honeybone made it obvious why he is one of the best in the
business by taking out the Open Mens State Titles and Felicity Sykala stylishly
took out the Open Women's. Up and comer Marshall Watson will be a name to look
out for in the future winning the Junior division. An exciting
event of the day was the Redback Surf Mat challenge. Corey McLean showed that
his skills are not only limited to a Bodyboard as he pulled into some solid tubes
and landed some amazing airs. Bodyboarding
Australasia's Terry McKenna had this to say about the Redback Pro: "It was
such a fantastic day for South Australian Bodyboarding, the success of this event
ensures that the future of the sport in S.A. is secure with plans in place for
a bigger and better event in 2007".
Event Organisors
would like to thank all those that made this event possible including Redback
Surf Australia, Swellnet, Onboard Surf, Riptide, First Flight, The Royal Family
Hotel, SA Frames, Surfing South Australia, The Alexandrina Council and of course
