Young
19 year old Coolangatta surfer Brent Dorrington has defeated a high quality field
and will now take his place in the official Quiksilver Pro Trials next March which
will see 16 select surfers chasing the wild card positions into the ASP World
Championship Tour Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.
This is an awesome opportunity for me and to line up
in the Quiksilver Pro Trials at Snapper Rocks will be amazing. You can only think
about surfing against the worlds best and big crowds and perfect waves and
its sort of scary but thats still a long way off! The main trials
will be super hard, Incredible internationals like Dane Reynolds (USA) and Clay
Marzo (Hawaii) will probably surf along with some super Australian surfers that
will make it even harder than this event but, Ill be the local and Ill
definitely have some things going for me!
Dorrington won a very close final defeating fellow Gold Coaster
Jay Thompson in a final that saw the lead change multiple times. Both surfers
are in great form at present as they also made the final of last weeks Queensland
Championship Circuit event. For Thompson, the disappointment of not winning could
well be short term as theres a good chance hell also take a position
in the Quiksilver Pro Trials as Queenslands highest rated World Qualifying
Series surfer. The final field of the trials will be announced shortly.
Dorringtons position is assured and the powerful developing
young surfer now has some added motivation to prepare for the opportunity to surf
in one of the worlds biggest events at his own local beach along with going into
the 2007 Australasian Pro Junior Season full of confidence and ambition!
No one will know the superbank better than me come next
March, that much I can assure you and Ill be there to give it my best!
The event ran in tiny waves at just 0.5m but regardless
of the size, power surfing stood out with Dorrington and Thompson throwing some
relatively massive sprays on their forehand and backhand snaps and the final scores
highlighted the outstanding small wave surfing these guys put on with Dorrington
on 17.15, Thompson 16.9, Damon Harvey 14.6 and Adler on 12.15 out of a possible
20 on two waves. Harvey and Adler are also Gold Coast surfers! Sunshine
Coast pair Mitch Colborne and Dave Reardon Smith were the early round standouts
scoring consistent excellent rides but both found difficulties finding the right
waves in their semi finals to finish the event in 5th and 7th position respectively.
