Coast surfer Dean Hall has tamed the chunky barrels of Main Beach, Point Lookout,
to win the senior mens title at the fourth and final round of the Printpoint
Queensland Masters Surfing Circuit held at Nth Stradbroke Island today.
With state crowns as well as Queensland team spots for the
2007 Australian Open Surfmasters titles on the line, Queenslands best masters
surfers showed that they still have the talent to mix it with the next generation
of rippers. In clean 5ft peaks, it was Hall who overcame
a slow start to post a narrow victory over current Queensland champion Mark Richardson
(Palm Beach) in the blue ribbon division. Chasing
an 8.2 with five minutes to go in the final, Hall unleashed a flurry of powerful
backhand maneourves to notch up an excellent scoring 8.4 ride. Regardless
of a last minute wave splurge by Richardson, Halls never-say-die-attitude
got him across the line. Halls two-wave total
of 16.07 was enough to secure the win over Richardson (15.63). Sunshine
Beach surfer Tully St John and Palm Beach teacher Ben Falvey finished third and
fourth respectively. In the battle of the locals,
Craig Frampton upstaged current Australian Open Surfmasters champion and good
mate John Truman to win the 45 mens division. In bittersweet circumstances,
Truman walked away with his maiden Queensland title ahead of Frampton and Sunshine
Coast surfer Peter Pringle (Mudjimba). Pringle had
a day to remember, locking into the 'barrel of the day' to come away with the
Tooheys Extra Dry 'wave of the weekend' prize. Former
World Qualifying Series (WQS) competitor and North End boardriders member Chris
Brooks (Currumbin Waters) blitzed his fellow finalists to comfortably win the
over 35 mens final. Likewise, Palm Beach surfer
Mark Trout Traucnieks dominated the over 40 mens final to wrap-up
another Queensland title, while Peter Eales (Palm Beach) was a well-deserved winner
in the over 40 mens division. The 55 mens
division didnt disappoint, charging into the hard-hitting left hand peaks.
Despite some stiff competition, it was surfing Solicitor Mal Chalmers (Mermaid
Beach) who took home the win along with a state title. State
champions were crowned across senior men (over 28), over 35, over 40, over 45,
over 50 and over 55 divisions. |
