Background:
A memorial surfing competition was held on the weekend of the 2nd & 3rd of
December at Soldiers Beach, to pay respect and remember Phil Viles, a great mate,
fellow surfer and a fine member of the community. Phil, a Fireman, lost his life
whilst fighting a fire, trying to save a small boy who also died in the tragedy.
The
"Vilesy Goodtime Surfing Festival" was run and organised in conjunction
by two local Boardriders Clubs, the Norah Surfing fraternity, Tea Tree Boardriders
Birdie Beach/Frazer Park and the NSW Fire Brigade.
The event was run over two days. Day one on Saturday was held at Soldiers Beach
in fun contestable waves. Sunday - finals day - was held in testing, sometimes
miserable conditions at Lakes Beach, but it was testament to Phil's memory how
many people turned up for the finals.
The
climax and highlight of the weekend was the mass paddle out and reef laying ceremony,
by all his friends, family & competitors - a very moving, spiritual, and amazing
sight!
The
event also hosted a function at the Norah Head Sporties Club and a Charity Auction
was held with some amazing Surfing Memorabilia going under the hammer. The night
raised over $5000 for the Oncology Unit at Gosford Hospital (the Charity nominated
by Phil's widow Tracey).
