Severe
weather patterns on the usual pristine beaches of Nth Stradbroke Island couldnt
prevent Harrison Roach (under 18 boys, Sunshine beach) and Dimity Stoyle (under
16 girls, Maroochydore) securing prestigious Queensland junior titles in their
respective divisions at the third and final round of the new-look FCS Queensland
Junior Series today.
Roach and Stoyle will now join recently crowned Queensland
under 16 boys champion James Woods (Coolangatta) and under 18 girls champion
Tiana McNeven (Tugun) in the FCS Queensland junior surfing team to compete at
the 06 Quiksilver Australian Grommet titles from Saturday, 25th November
to Saturday, 2nd December, 2006 The pinnacle event of junior surfing in
Australia.
Surfing Queenslands (event organizers) decision to move
the event location to Deadmans beach, Point Lookout, the southerly-protected headland
on the northern end of Nth Stradbroke Island was truly appreciated by finalists
and spectators alike. Due to the abnormally thundery
conditions on offer, todays start time was delayed until 10am to ensure
the safety of competitors.
Making the most of the afternoons improving 3ft conditions,
the blue ribbon under 18 boys finalists reinforced their reputation as Australias
finest, executing a radical exhibition of progressive surfing. In
a seesawing 20-minute final, it was Roach who saved his best for last, patiently
waiting for a last minute wave to snare victory over Chris Bennetts (Main beach).
In doing so, Roach secured his maiden Queensland junior title (2000-points), 140-points
clear of Bennetts and a prestigious position in the FCS Queensland junior surfing
team.
Despite trailing in third position for most of the final,
the 17-year-old Sunshine beach surfer executed a scintillating display of high-speed
reos and aggressive snaps in the pocket to post the events highest
wave score, an impressive 9.7 on his final ride. Roachs
combined total of 17.37 was enough to edge out Bennetts 16-points.
Blake Ainsworth (14.33, Coolangatta) and Noah Lane (14.17,
Rainbow beach) finished third and fourth respectively.
05 Queensland under 16 boys champion Chris Friend
(Alexandra headland) was surprisingly knocked out of the under 18 boys round
2 heats today. In the tightly contested under 16 girls
final, round 2 winner Stoyle out-dueled fellow Sunshine Coast surfer Naomi Stevic
(Sunrise beach) to claim back-to-back wins and thereby a prestigious Queensland
title.
In a low scoring final, Stoyle (9.1-points) made the most
of an early wave score, 6.17, to dominate proceedings. Despite a late charge by
Stevic (8.33-points), the in-form Sunshine Coast surfer showed nerves-of -settle
to recapture the lead with a 2.93 ride within the final minute of the final.
15-year-old Stoyle was in devastating form throughout the
two-day event, posting the events highest combined heat score, a super impressive
17.93-points in her semi-final. Coolangatta surfing
dynamo James Woods cemented his reputation as Queensland finest under 16 surfer,
claiming the trifecta in the under 16 boys division. Backing up his impressive
wins in the opening two rounds of the new-look series, Woods (14.07) utterly destroyed
his opponents younger brother James (11.43), Fraser Biden (9.7, Sunshine
beach) and Murray Antonieff (9.5, Nth Stradbroke Island) to seal yet another win.
Woods training partner and newly crowned under
18 girls Queensland champion Tiana McNeven failed in her quest for three
consecutive wins with a third placing behind eventual winner Briana Lenton (Sunshine
beach) and runner-up Izzy Chilcott (Tugun) in the under 18 girls final.
A strong result in the Queensland titles is regarded as a
major step in a surfers competitive career with the list of past champions
featuring some of the greatest names in the surfing world including current World
Championship Tour (WCT) rated surfers Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Dean Morrison.
A surfers best two results from the three-event
series will be used to calculate 06 Queensland junior champions across the
four separate divisions. Similarly, the complete FCS Queensland junior team to
contest this years Australian Grommet titles will be announced throughout
the week. Results: Under
