Trials to the Title for 14-Year-Old Tyler Wright, Winner of the Beachley Classic

MANLY BEACH, Australia (Monday, October 13, 2008) – Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, made ASP History today as the youngest ever winner of an ASP World Tour event, defeating fellow finalist Silvana Lima (BRA), 23, at the Beachley Classic in peaky two foot (1 metre) waves at Manly Beach.
Â
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic was treated to dramatic action all week, with the increased 20% ratings points wreaking havoc on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title race before culminating in Wright’s historic win.
Â
“This is easily the best day of my life,” Wright said. “I’m so stoked. I don’t really have the words to describe it. I knew Silvana (Lima) would be dangerous out there so I just did my best to stick to my game plan and get waves.”
Â
Wright, who gained entry into the Beachley Classic after her impressive win at the Oakley Trials last Thursday, went on an absolute tear, defeating reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, and Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, en route to her Finals berth with Lima.
Â
“These are girls that all us grommets look up to and to just be competing with them is an honor,” Wright said. “I had no expectations whatsoever this week for myself and I think that really working in my favor.”
Â
The young natural-footer has been on a tear lately, qualifying for the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships last week before going on her giant-slaying here in Manly this week.
Â
“It’s been an amazing two weeks,” Wright said. “I think I am just going to go home and chill out and let it all sink in next.”
Â
Lima was in awesome form on the final day, ripping from the Quarterfinals through to Final before coming up just short in the Final, repeating her performance from last season.
Â
“I don’t know happened,” Lima said. “The surf was really bad and I just seemed to have bad luck. It was definitely tough out there but I’m happy with my performance.”
Â
Despite the disappointing loss to Wright, the Brazilian’s runner-up rockets her into 5th place on the ASP Women’s World Tour ratings and places her well into the race for the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title.
Â
“It’s really tough for me - I wanted to win, but it still feels pretty good because I’m moving up in the rankings just as the tour moves into South America,” Lima said.
Â
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, former ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 1 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, took over the lead from reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, last Saturday, was in excellent form today, securing an impressive 8.67 out of a possible 10 in her Semifinal bout before succumbing to an ankle injury.
Â
“On my last turn of the wave I injured my foot it’s very frustrating but it happens all the time,” Mulanovich said. “I’ll just try and get my foot better and think to myself this is not a bad injury. I’ll get back for the next event”.
Â
While the ankle injury remains a concern, Mulanovich is pleased with her equal 3rd place finish in the Beachley Classic and will head into her hometown of Peru as the No. 1 seed on the ASP Women’s World Tour.
Â
Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, current No. 4 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, was in fine form this morning before succumbing to the wildcard Wright in the Semifinals.
Â
“It’s frustrating in a heat with no waves,” Donohoe said. “You know you can get a score but nothing comes.  I wanted to make the Finals and was so close, I’m pretty bummed.”
Â
Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 3 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, had her Beachley Classic run halted by Lima, but is still a major contender for the ASP Women’s World Title and will look forward to the next event in Peru.
Â
“I’m looking forward to Peru – it’s one of my favorite events,” Beachley said. “I came second there last year and hopefully I can go one better, then coming into Hawaii, that’s always my strongest leg. I’m frustrated and disappointed I’ve been knocked out today, but it’s been amazing to see the crowd support and it was also amazing we could get the event of the ground. I would have loved nothing more than to win and have a fairytale ending to an emotional week.”

MANLY BEACH, Australia (Monday, October 13, 2008) – Clean surf in the two-to-three foot (1 metre) range is pushing through at Manly today, and event organizers at the Beachley Classic have called the final day of competition on, with a champion being crowned by day’s end. The Quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 9:15am.
Â
“We have clean little waves coming in here this morning and it looks like this is going to be the best we’ll get so we’ll be running the Quarterfinals as soon as possible this morning,” Matt Wilson, Beachley Classic Contest Organizer, said. “We have some really dynamic match-ups ahead and we’re looking forward to an exciting day of competition.”
Â
Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, Oakley Trials winner and wildcard into the Beachley Classic, scored the upset of the season last Saturday, eliminating reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, in Round 3. Wright will now face veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in Quarterfinal 2.
Â
Gilmore’s shock elimination has allowed Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, to jump into the No. 1 position in ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, a lead she will no doubt be looking to capitalize on when she faces off against stylish natural-footer, Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, in Quarterfinal 3.
Â
Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion, may have announced her retirement last Friday (effective at the end of the season), but is showing no signs of slowing down as she blitzes her home break in hopes of securing a record 8th ASP Women’s World Title. Beachley will meet an in-form Silvana Lima (BRA) 23, in Quarterfinal 4.
Â
When Beachley Classic competition commences, up first will be Julia De La Rosa Toro (PER), 26, battling Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, in Quarterfinal 1.

Small Surf Forces Lay Day for Beachley Classic

MANLY BEACH, Australia (Sunday, October 12, 2008) – Event organizers at the Beachley Classic have called competition off for the day, with only small one foot (0.5 metre) waves on offer at the primary site at Manly Beach, Australia.
Â
Event No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic has completed Round 1 through 3, and with two days remaining in the waiting period, event organizers will look to run the last seven heats in the best conditions possible.
Â
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the winds blowing as hard yesterday afternoon so we don’t have a pulse this morning,” Matt Wilson, Beachley Classic Contest Director, said. “We’re hoping that the winds will blow a bit harder this afternoon so that we can run again tomorrow in similar conditions to yesterday morning.”
Â
There have already been some massive upsets in the Beachley Classic, with the elimination of both the reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, and the winner of the last Dream Tour event in Brazil Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, in Round 3 yesterday.
Â
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, has overtaken Gilmore in the race for the ASP Women’s World Title and will face Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, in Quarterfinal 3 when competition resumes.
Â
Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, Oakley Trials Winner and wildcard in the Beachley Classic, caused a major upset yesterday in defeating former ratings frontrunner Gilmore. The young natural-footer will now face Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in Quarterfinal 2.
Â
Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion, officially announced her retirement from full-time competition last Friday, effective at the end of the year. That didn’t stop the iconic Australian from defeating fellow veteran Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS), 33, in Round 3 yesterday and Beachley will now face a red-hot Silvana Lima (BRA), 23, in Quarterfinal 4.
Â
Event organizers at the Beachley Classic will reconvene tomorrow at 7am for a possible 7:30am start.

Wildcard Tyler Wright Upsets ASP Women’s World Champion Gilmore at Beachley Classic

MANLY BEACH, Australia (Saturday, October 11, 2008) – Some of the biggest and potentially costly upsets of the season went down today while Round 3 of the Beachley Classic was completed in clean two-to-three foot surf at the primary venue in Manly Beach, Australia.
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic saw the shock elimination of reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and two-time defending Beachley Classic Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, at the hands of Oakley Trials Winner and wildcard Tyler Wright (AUS), 14.
Â
“I’m super stoked about taking Steph (Gilmore) down,” Wright said. “It’s very exciting and I never thought it would happened. I just did my best to be patient and pick off the best waves and that seemed to work. Steph is a hero to pretty much every grommet in Australia so to be beat her is just unbelievable.”
Â
Wright displayed maturity and patience beyond her young years in her Round 3 clash with the champ, waiting several minutes before collecting two solid scoring rides that put Gilmore on the back foot while the clock ticked down. Wright will now face tour veteran Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in her opening Quarterfinal heat.
Â
“The heats are only going to get harder and harder from here on out,” Wright said. “Everything from here on out is a bonus so I’ll just be trying to catch the best waves and surf the best I can.”
Â
While Gilmore looked to be in form early in the heat, the phenomenal natural-footer was unable to find solid enough scores to overtake the younger challenger, and will take her ASP Women’s World Title defense to the next stop in Peru.
Â
“I struggled to produce any decent scores out there in those conditions,” Gilmore said. “Tyler (Wright) is a very patient and mature competitor who deserved the win and I’m sure will keep causing upsets throughout the remainder of the event. This will obviously lower my place on the ratings, but I’ll throw this one away and start fresh in Peru.”
Â
Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, former ASP Women’s World Champion, overtook the ratings lead on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour with her Round 3 victory over Karina Petroni (USA), 20. Prior to the Beachley Classic, Mulanovich was just a scant 12 points behind Gilmore in the race for the ASP Women’s World Title, and with her Quarterfinals berth, the Peruvian now sits atop the ratings.
Â
“After seeing Steph (Gilmore) eliminated just before my heat, I felt like the pressure was off a little bit and I had nothing to lose,” Mulanovich said. “I felt pretty free and I think this helped my surfing. You just have get the right waves, have the right board and surf the best you can”.
Â
Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, caused another major upset today, defeating winner of the last ASP Women’s World Tour event in Brazil, Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, in Round 3 in stunning fashion.
Â
“Bartels is a scary competitor because she can bring anything out at any time,” Woods said. “She’s definitely tough competition. It’s a great result for me to crack the Quarterfinals and comes at a crucial point of the year.”
Â
Event organizers at the Beachley Classic will reconvene tomorrow at 7am for a possible 7:30am start.

Beachley Classic Day 1 Powers Through Clean Conditions at Freshwater
MANLY BEACH, Australia (Friday, October 10, 2008) – The 2008 Beachley Classic got underway this morning, completing Rounds 1 and 2 as well as the opening two heats of Round 3 at nearby Freshwater Beach in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves.
Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic was privy to some dramatic upsets during Round 1, however top seeds prevailed eventually, advancing through to Round 3.
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 1 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, was sent into the elimination Round 2 today at the hands of Rosanne Hodge (ZAF), 21, and Oakley Trials winner Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, this morning, but the champ rebounded in her second heat of the day, taking the win to advance through to Round 3 where she will once again draw the youngster Wright.
“That’s the first time I’ve been in Round 2 all year so that was interesting,” Gilmore said. “I didn’t have a warm-up this morning and I was perhaps a little too cruisey in my Round 1 heat. I was on some new equipment and didn’t get the momentum going that I needed. Stoked to get through Round 2 and I think I’ll be drawing Tyler (Wright) again in Round 3. Should be a good match-up.”
Julia de la Rosa Toro (AUS), 26, current No. 11 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, caused a major upset this afternoon, defeating current ASP World No. 4 Samantha Cornish (AUS), 27, in Round 3 of the Beachley Classic.
“This matches my best result of the season,” De La Rosa Toro said. “I haven’t made the Quarterfinals since the first event of the year so I’m excited to advance through and get a result. The Beachley Classic is a super important event for all of us, given the 20% increase in prize points. I’m sitting outside the bubble at the moment so I need a result here in Sydney.’
Cornish was in blistering form today, netting the event high single-wave score of a 9.80 out of a possible 10 in Round 1 before opening her Round 3 heat with an impressive 7.65. The Australian, however, was unable to stop a rampaging De La Rosa Toro from fighting back with excellent scores of her own.
“I knew Sam (Cornish) would be dangerous on the righthanders because she was surfing them so well in Round 1,” De La Rosa Toro said. “She started out with a really good one, but I was just patient and waited for the waves that offered a little more scoring potential and it paid off.”
De La Rosa Toro will face current ASP Women’s World No. 5 Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, in Round 4 of the Beachley Classic.
Today’s action occurred today amidst the big announcement that Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 3 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, will retire at the end of the season. The announcement was made via a heavily-attended press conference at the main event site in Manly Beach.
Despite her media obligations, Beachley found time to advance through her Round 1 heat, showcasing the characteristic style and flair that has seen the iconic Australian advance to the top of the surfing world throughout the past two decades.
Beachley will face fellow veteran Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS), 33, in the final Round 3 heat when Beachley Classic action resumes.
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am at the primary venue at Manly for a possible 7:30am start.
When Beachley Classic competition resumes, Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 22, will battle Jacqueline Silva (BRA), 29, in Heat 3 of Round 3.

Lay Day Called for Beachley Classic, Possible Site Relocation in the Coming Days
|
MANLY BEACH, Australia (Thursday, October 9, 2008) – Small surf in the one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) range on offer at Manly Beach today prompted event organizers at the Beachley Classic to postpone commencing until at least tomorrow with a possible site relocation in the coming days. “We’re still early into the waiting period so we’re certainly not panicking,” Matt Wilson, Beachley Classic Contest Director, said. “This afternoon, we’ll be looking at the swell forecasts and assessing backup options should we decide to go mobile in the coming days. We have plenty of time and will be working to ensure that the girls compete in the best possible conditions.” Stop No. 5 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Beachley Classic saw the Oakley Trials ran this morning with Tyler Wright (AUS), 14, defeating Arini Mason (NZL), 18, to earn a spot into the main event where she will draw reigning ASP Women’s World Champion and two-time defending event winner Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 20, in Round 1. “Steph (Gilmore) is my favorite surfer and I’m excited to get the opportunity to compete against her,” Wright said. “I don’t know if they’re going to run competition again today but hopefully the waves improve.” Event organizers will meet at 7am tomorrow to assess conditions at the main site at Manly Beach to determine a possible start to the 2008 Beachley Classic. Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and Beachley Classic event organizer will battle compatriots Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, and Nicola Atherton (AUS), 22, in Heat 4 of Round 1 when competition commences. Beachley Classic’s Increased Ratings Points Purse Has ASP Top 17 Salivating

Pictured: Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, current No. 6 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, caught a fire in Brazil last month to take down a heavily-stacked field and announce herself a as contender this season.
MANLY BEACH, Australia (Wednesday, October 8, 2008) – The 2008 Beachley Classic, stop No. 5 of 8 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, commences its waiting period tomorrow and the ASP Top 17 are geared up to do battle for the biggest prize purse of the year.
In addition to the increased prize purse, the Beachley Classic also offers a 20% increase in ratings points compared with other events this season, making it all the more valuable for surfers looking to contest the 2008 ASP Women’s World Title, crack the Top 5 or requalify for next season’s Dream Tour.
Melanie Bartels (HAW), 26, current No. 6 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, is coming into Manly hot on the heels of her maiden Dream Tour victory as a member of the ASP Top 17 in Brazil last month, and the powerful Hawaiian’s confidence is through the roof despite her unfamiliarity with break.
“I feel good – I feel confident and I’m focused and ready to go!” Bartels said. “I don’t really know much about the break at Manly because it was pretty flat last year, but I’m sure it could get good so I’m just going to be ready for anything.”
After a slow start to the season, Bartels has since rebounded in stunning fashion and finds herself in contention for Top 5 positioning pending a result in Manly.
”Steph Gilmore is a major threat at the Beachley Classic because she’s won it two times in a row,” Bartels said. “Layne Beachley will be dangerous too because she’s really consistent and Sofia (Mulanovich) because she’s very focused and also Silvana (Lima) because she just kills it. I’m just going to go out and do my thing and surf it heat-by-heat.”
Bartels will face Silvana Lima (BRA), 23, and Julia De La Rosa Toro (PER), 26, in Round 1 when Beachley Classic competition commences.
Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 22, current No. 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour ratings, missed the opening event of the season due to injury, but has since racked up three 5th place finishes. The young goofy-footer will look to improve near home turf in Manly this week.
“I’m really happy with how I’ve gone this year,” Miley-Dyer said. “In previous years, I’ve had 9ths and this year, I’ve had straight fifths so I’m stoked with my consistency. Being injured made me realize how much I love competing and how much it sucks to be on the sidelines for ASP Women’s World tour events so I’m looking to improve on my 8th ranking right now and cement my place on tour for 2009 and to move into the Top 6.”
Having grown up in Sydney, Miley-Dyer is appreciative to have an event close to home and will look to use her years of experience at the break to her advantage.
”I love having an event in Sydney,” Miley-Dyer said. “I’m always going to be a Sydney girl and I love coming home to this city! It’s definitely special for me to be able to have my family at the event and I’ve been surfing at Manly since I was a grommet. Last year, this event was critical to my end rating after I made the Semis so I’m looking to do well again.”
Miley-Dyer squares off against Amee Donohoe (AUS), 27, and Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS), 33, in the opening heat of Round 1 when Beachley Classic competition kicks off.
Nicola Atherton (AUS), 22, 2008 Dream Tour rookie and current No. 14 on the ASP Women’s World Tour, hasn’t had the best start to her maiden year amongst the world’s elite, but hopes to remedy that with the increased ratings points purse at this week’s Beachley Classic.
“I think I’m close to last on the ratings,” Atherton said. “My results so far this year have been really average, but I need to forget about that and take the positive aspects from my heats so far on tour and put my experiences to good use. The Beachley Classic is worth more points, so if I could get a good result here, it would really improve my position.”
Atherton will do battle with former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and event organizer Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, and Rebecca Woods (AUS), 24, in Round 1 of the Beachley Classic.
The Beachley Classic begins its waiting period tomorrow, Thursday, October 9, 2008 and runs through October 14th, 2008.
The event will be webcast LIVE via www.aspworldtour.com and www.swellnet.com.au/beachleyclassic08
